What is Obnosis?

Here we are going to take a look at the strange word and subject of OBNOSIS, and how very important it is!

OBNOSIS, 1. the observation of the obvious; the ability to look at the obvious. (SH Spec 48, 6411C04) 2 . this is a coined (invented) word meaning observing the obvious. There is no English or any other language precise equivalent for it. (HCO PL 26 Jun 72)

People are very good at not spotting the obvious. This has very much to do with confront. As said in one of the definitions below, OBNOSIS: the observation of the obvious. How often have you heard people say when looking at something; “That can’t be possible; It’s not like that, etc.”  To arrive at solutions and “why’s” it is vital that a person obnose what is in front of them. As LRH says:

“Communication requires that you observe the obvious fact that there is something there to be communicated with.  Awfully obvious, isn’t it? Happens to be the heart and soul of communication.”

“If you don’t know there’s something there to be communicated with, you miscommunicate.  All miscommunication is based on the fact that the person who is doing the communication does not know there is something there to be communicated with!  In other words, he doesn’t observe the obvious.”
“Obnosis”, 9 Jan 57, from “The Anatomy of Cause” transcripts, page 69

For anyone who has studied the Data Series and done “Why finding” they will appreciate the importance of obnosis.

“Whys are obtained by observing the obvious (OBNOSIS) closely enough to find the biggest OUTPOINT that explains all the nearby outpoints.
LRH, HCOPL 10 March 72, “Exec Esto Hatting Duties”, Management Series volume 2, page 22

If a person cannot confront, they cannot obnose ……

“That which is not confronted and inspected tends to persist.  Thus, in the absence of his own confronting, mass collects.  The stable datum forbids inspection.  It’s an automatic solution.  It’s ‘safe.’  It solves everything.  He no longer has to inspect to solve, so he never as-ises the mass.  He gets caught in the middle of the mass.  And it collects more and more confusion and his ability to inspect becomes less and less. The more he isn’t confronting, the less he can confront.  This becomes a dwindling spiral.

“So the thing he has adopted to handle his environment for him is the thing which reduces his ability to handle his environment.”
LRH, HCOB 5 Sept 78 “Anatomy of a Service Facsimile”, Technical Bulletins volume XI, pages 232-233

  1. Wow how true! This is true especially when you have a barrier of some sort. Something you cannot and are not confronting. It builds a mass a barrier. It takes a lot of resolve to just sit down and obnose one item of a barrier at a time. One piece of paper if it is a long written article. Confront one paragraph at a time. By confronting the mass small piece by small piece the mass dissipates and when you some out the other end you feel light and happy again. Non-confront does have mass. So true.
